Singlehanded Sailing Society

About the SSS

Mission

Promote the equitable sharing of ideas and experiences in the sport of singlehanded sailing

The Singlehanded Sailing Society (SSS) was conceived to provide a forum where sailors and others interested in the sport of singlehanded sailing could share their ideas and experiences. It is the intent of the SSS to make it possible for such sailors to compete in seaworthy sailing vessels of various types and designs on a fair and equitable basis.

The purpose of the races is to provide an organized arena in which ideas, equipment, designs, and vessels specifically created, built, modified, or equipped for long distance singlehanded racing may be tested and evaluated through friendly sportsmanlike competition. The development of personal skill in singlehanded sailing is encouraged through sailing events and seminars.

What We Do

8 Annual Race Events

The SSS organizes eight regular annual races in and around the San Francisco Bay:

Round the Rocks (April)
Drakes Bay (August)

Sort of Singlehanded

singlehanded transpacific yacht race

The SSS also organizes the legendary Singlehanded TransPacific Yacht Race (aka SHTP) from San Francisco to Kauai, Hawaii.

The race occurs in odd numbered years and has been dubbed “a buglight for weirdos” based on the unique challenge of sailing solo across the Pacific Ocean.

The LongPac, or Longitudinal Pacific Race, is the qualifier for the SHTP and occurs in even numbered years.

Education & seminars

Along with organized races, the SSS sponsors lectures and educational seminars to promote safe shorthanded racing and cruising, and to help prepare interested skippers for the challenge of the long distance races sponsored by the SSS.

Awards & Recognition

Perpetual trophies are awarded to the Singlehanded and Doublehanded Season Champions.

T-shirts are included with each race. Racers may elect to receive a shirt and plaques for each race, else have the equivalent dollars go toward youth sailing foundations across the bay.
