An enlightening visit yesterday aboard 132' Training Tall Ship MATTHEW TURNER in Sausalito. Rigging is nearly complete. Looks like still much to do, especially below decks.

What is the sail above and behind the mainsail named?

    1. Moonraker
    2. Badger
    3. Course
    4. Ringtail
    5. Donkey

Nothing like having Stan Honey for knowledgeable accompaniment. We were both gimping: Stan healing from a torn hamstring, me with knee replacement. We both tried balancing on one foot, part of our PT exercises.

Here's Stan showing position of something yet to be installed at the MATTHEW TURNER's binnacle. Is the missing part (or parts)
    1) Quadrantal Balls for horizontal compass correction.
    2) Kelvin Balls, red and green, for horizontal compass deviation correction.
    3) Flinders Bar, for vertical compass correction.
    4) A small bronze tribute statuary of Trim, Flinder's intrepid cat, first to circumnavigate Australia.

The MATTHEW TURNER has 4 yards on her foremast. That would make her square rigged (on the foremast.) Is the MATTHEW TURNER rigged as a

I think Philpott has it right.

In my home town of Benicia, remains of the Matthew Turner Shipyard are still visible. Prints of two ships built there are in my office, along with a scale model of a race boat built (elsewhere) at about the same time, specifically 1885. Do you recognize her?

Congrats, Jackie! You answered the 3 questions correctly.
BobJ: is your model of PURITAN? I can't see if there's a centerboard because of the glare.

Indeed it is, and there is a centerboard down there.

BobJ's fine model of PURITAN shows the 1885 America's Cup victorious defender which defeated the English GENESTA 2-0. PURITAN was designed by 36 year old Edward Burgess and was 94 feet on deck LOA. The bowsprit was 38 feet long, the mainboom 77 feet, and the spinnaker pole a mere 62 feet long. I can't imagine a crew having to go to the tip of the bowsprit, or "tucking in" a reef on that boom, which likely weighed a ton. Gybing a 62 foot spinnaker pole is no child's play either.

After her America's Cup victory, even more sail area was added to PURITAN, and she was rerigged as a schooner.

Puritan's bowsprit was as long as my entire boat - and Surprise! still seems huge compared to Rags.

My model ship has one more mast than yours, Bob.

And I'll raise you one. Look! There's a stumpy little mizzen mast, too.

Oh gosh, we're clogging up this serious history channel with Boat Banter. Where's my burgee?
